I teach art at Great Lakes Academy, a charter school on the South Side of Chicago. Children who are interested in learning more about the arts or developing their artistic talents face many barriers. The arts are often considered less central to a child's education, when in reality they offer a unique chance for creativity, passion, and growth. My aim is to expose our students to notable art and artists from the past, but also to focus on the art that is created within their own community. Our lessons will teach our students about the elements of art, such as color, line, and texture, and give them the opportunity to create artworks that reflect their emotions, the things that they love, and the important moments that they have experienced. This is our school's first year offering an in-house art program, and we are definitely in need of supplies!
