Two years ago I requested to change the seating arrangement in my classroom to large rectangular group tables rather than individual desks. The current trend in teaching is to encourage engagement through collaborative learning. Tables have made this learning style more accessible, but storage for materials is lacking. The seat pockets would be used by each student, so that they have quick access to notebooks and folders that are frequently used throughout. We are currently using plastic drawers for each table group, but this takes time which is then lost lost in learning. By using seat pockets on each individual chair students will no longer be able to store their backpack on the chair. The backpack rack would work wonderfully at the front of the room near our meeting space and under our dry erase/SMART board.
