Providing seating, equipment, and fidget toys to help regulate their bodies would greatly benefit my students. When sensory needs are being met, students are able to optimize learning. For many of my students, after being given the opportunity to take a sensory break or choose alternative seating, they feel more calm, and ready to learn. The chairs with the yoga balls, allow for movement without disrupting class. The exercise bike can be used in the sensory room for breaks to burn off excess energy that some build up from sitting for long periods of time in the general education environment. My classroom has low lighting, and soft music playing. My students like the one bean bag I have as an alternative to school chairs to work in. I instantly see their bodies relax, when given a chance to sit in a preferred location. Focus and work stamina increase as their bodies are more at ease. This calm classroom environment has greatly reduced tantrums, and outbursts for each of my students. I am asking for two more Big Joe bean bags. The fidget toys are something students can quietly use to keep their hands busy. My students find these very useful in my classroom, and in the general education classrooms.
