My students come from a wide variety of backgrounds. Each one is special and unique. They are eager to learn and incredibly intelligent. They jump at the chance to learn new things, but unfortunately many of them don't have much opportunity to experience life outside of what is already familiar to them. Because of this, many of the concepts we've learned about in Social Studies this year- like world cultures, war & revolution, economics, geography- are hard for them to fully comprehend. In addition, the state curriculum is very general and does not ensure that students do more than scratch the surface of these concepts. I am lucky enough however to work in a school where my administration encourages teachers to be creative and innovative, and where projects like this one are welcome. I am also lucky to teach students who have vivid imaginations, and can still think "outside the box," so I know they will really make the most out of this experience.
