I work with students from transitional kindergarten through twelfth grade, serving a wide range of abilities in a high-need community in Southern California. Many of my students come from large families where both parents work hard, often leaving little time or resources for “extras.” Because of this, my students rarely have the opportunity to explore activities that build their physical fitness and motor skills. The pure joy on their faces when I introduce a new game or piece of equipment is a powerful reminder of why I teach—those moments show me how meaningful these opportunities are for them, especially since they don’t often get to experience them outside of school.
