Our school is in a blue collar town near the Blue Ridge Mountains. We have students whose ancestors go back for generations, including Native Americans and a significant percentage of African Americans. More recently, we have had a small influx of the children of immigrants from Mexico and Asia. A significant percentage are on free or reduced lunch. Some come from stable two parent families; many live with a single mother or grandparent. Some have parents who are in jail. At our school, the teachers have gone above and beyond their classroom duties to provide students with additional activities, such as chorus, basketball and volley teams, tutoring, and our LEGO Club. We care about our students, and provide these activities without extra pay.
