Our 9th grade science class is Earth and Environmental Science. This class prepares students for life-long scientific inquiry and environmental stewardship. In just four weeks, our students have learned about the environmental impact of food production and mining, taking stances in debates about the tension between finding resources and caring for our planet. As residents of Louisiana, they will learn about coastal erosion and its impact on our ecosystem and economy. The class helps students master the scientific process and develop the reading skills that will be necessary in AP and college-level courses. A set of chromebooks will enrich our class, empowering students to work at different paces, create multi-media projects, and research topics of interest. We will bring multi-media texts into our class, integrating video and photos alongside our readings. With chromebooks, students can learn about a topic through video and texts, working at their own pace and returning to the sources that interest them most. At the end of each unit, students will be responsible for creating multi-media presentations that summarize their learning. Throughout this year and beyond, my students will become invested in caring for our planet and preserving our resources for generations to come.
