The medical staff and therapists suggest that the students spend a portion of every day out of their wheelchairs to provide relief for their muscles and give us the opportunity to help them develop their range of motion. Stretching and massage exercises can be done while the students are on their blow-couches, inflatable lounger or bean bag seat, and they enjoy the time spent in a more relaxed position. Our afternoon lessons are typically conducted while the students are in their leisure equipment, and they are more likely to participate when they are comfortable. We may read a story that correlates with our unit of study and give the students the opportunity to continue developing their comprehension goals by having them answer questions. We also may use the time to finish lessons and projects from earlier in the day. No matter the activity, the students love to participate while being allowed to stay in their leisure equipment, and we have found that they maintain a high level of alertness even towards the end of the day.
