In the great words of Mr. Fred Rodgers, "play gives children a chance to practice what they are learning". When I visit a student within their educational environment, I come prepared with an array of individualized activities and materials to help the student increase their ability to engage in new and challenging activities while addressing their individualized learning goals. The way in which I plan for each student is highly variable but across my planning, I utilize materials in the following ways: I target language, critical thinking, and concept development through storybook reading and discussion. An understanding of math concepts is fostered by sorting, counting and categorizing. Items such as the water-beads, farm manipulative, and Birds in a Nest sorting set are used in conjunction with fine motor building tongs or scoops to heighten engagement and support not only an understanding of colors, categorizing, and size concepts but also to strengthen small muscles in the hand for writing and manipulation. Games such as ThinkFun Zingo, Match it! Counting Puzzle and the Wooden Pizza Party set offer a social turn-taking opportunity while building foundational numeracy skills. Literacy and writing are explored through books, journaling, social games such as Picture Bingo, working with writing tools and letter stamps as well as puzzles. Throughout all of my sessions, social skills are introduced and practiced through turn-taking opportunities a social games, conversations and learning how to advocate for help appropriately. Games such as Raccoon Rumpus, Sneaky Snacky Squirrel, Brownie Match, offer a time for children to engage in social communication, demonstrate pre-academic skills and also cope with frustrations. Although this is a small snapshot of how these materials will be used, I hope it is clear they will be loved and explored year after year by the students which I support.
