My students will learn social justice through the use of photography. The detailed lesson plan takes students through a picture gallery of historical artifacts as poignant photos, that include images of war and social injustice in America and around the world, both current and past. Students will learn to interpret these photos. In teams, they will create a portfolio of pictures to capture the current state of affairs in their neighborhood and school. They will understand that people experience injustice; understand how and why to take action to address injustice; recognize how experiences are shaped by membership in groups defined by race, gender, socioeconomic status, culture, ethnicity, and ability; they will recognize how the historical moment and the social context shape experience; and finally, it is hoped that they will develop empathy for people whose experience differs from their own.
