My students come from a high-poverty community in urban Maryland. They are curious 7 and 8 year-olds that are thirsty for knowledge and experience that is, by no fault of their own, out of their reach in this world. 99% of students at my school qualify for free or reduced lunch - which means that trips to museums, the aquarium, different parts of the country (or sometimes, even the state) are really out of the question. Many students know very little about life beyond their neighborhoods. This is a hard truth that holds them behind their competition in different parts of the state. They can't make the same connections in literature or appreciate certain readings the same way as their counterparts in wealthier districts that have that exposure.
