When students first learn that an owl pellet is regurgitated food many are pretty grossed out, but I love this hands-on dissection lab because it encourages my urban students to go outside of their comfort zone and think like a scientist. The lab provides a critical opportunity for students to take part in the entire scientific process from beginning to end. They will collect, record, and analyze data and before you know it, “Gross!” turns into “Wow, look what I found!” Your donation of owl pellets and forceps will give 90 fourth grade students the opportunity to dig for treasure in an authentic treasure hunt. Students dissect owl pellets, examine the structures found inside, and compare these samples to animal bone charts. They use the evidence collected to identify their owl’s last meal and make inferences about an owl’s place in its ecosystem. Even though my students are all at different reading and math levels, hands on science activities are an equalizing force and provide all students the opportunity to build confidence and experience success in the classroom. Please help my budding fourth grade scientists reach their potential and transform their thinking by donating to this project.
