I currently have 8 students that read at a kindergarten reading level but they are in 5th grade. I have another 8 students that read at a 1st/2nd grade level. I am trying to get my students interested in reading and wanting to read so that they can continue to practice and improve, but I am finding it difficult to provide my students with books that will still interest them at a 5th grade age level, when they are at a low reading level. Most books that are levels A-J (kindergarten-1st) are picture books or very simple and boring books that wouldn't interest a 5th grader. That's why I need these books that will allow my students to have access to books on their reading level that still interest them. The more children read, the better readers they will become. A child needs to read 40 books on their level before they are ready to move to the next reading level. That means I need to provide my students with as many books on their level as I can and I want to make sure my students actually want to read their books. I believe reading is fun and enjoyable and I want my struggling readers to feel that way about reading too. Right now, they dread reading and will avoid it at all costs. I also need an easel so that I can create Anchor Charts with my students while they sit on my area rug and learn new concepts. I currently only have one small whiteboard in my room so it will be beneficial to have an easel that doubles as an extra white board to write concepts on as I am teaching my students.
