After teaching college for years, I now have a high school classroom for the first time. I need help setting up a classroom library to support students in developing a lifelong love of reading! I want to build a classroom environment where students can't help finding something wonderful to read every single day. My students need high-interest, readable books on a wide range of themes so that they can find a mirror to their own lives, as well as discover completely new perspectives. On topics from first love and bullying to racial justice and climate change, these books will jumpstart our work this year and for years to come. We will use these books to discuss different narrative techniques, write about themes across different books, and explore experiences from our own lives. Using the chart paper, markers, index cards, and sticky notes, students will be able to take notes and share their ideas with the class, creating posters showing the powerful quotes, tantalizing ideas, and incredible metaphors they discover in their books.
