Honors students often are presented only with "old dead white male" literature. I'd like to show them literature that shows a perspective somewhat closer to their own. While the majority of my students have not had these experiences, they may know those who have. I want to teach the novel "Push" by Sapphire next year because I believe that it will help my students see the power that an education can have on a person's life, and understand another person's experience. This is a powerful novel that deals with powerful themes, including incest, child abuse, and teenage pregnancy. While these themes are disturbing, they also spark debate and discussion, which is necessary to help prepare students for college.
