My heritage Spanish speakers are frequently not literate in the language that is spoken to them at home. They do not see their bilingualism as a strength as they lack skills to harness the advantage their dual language and dual cultural heritage afford them. Research shows that reading is the most effective path to literacy. Research also shows that literacy skills transfer. Finding literature that is written in Spanish for the novice reader, but which contains intermediate subject matter takes time, thought, and recommendations. I have choosen these books based on the recommendations of teacher across the country. By facilitating stronger heritage language literacy, we can not only boost literacy across the disciplines but also empower these heritage speakers
