Working with high poverty students is a challenge within itself but trying to work with them without proper supplies and resources is even harder. I am a first-year teacher and when I received my classroom, there was not a single book left in it. I scrambled to purchase my own books and I received donations from other veteran teachers in the building but still our classroom library is very slim. A lot of the few books we do have are outdated or falling apart. We make the most of what we have but a limited classroom library can be discouraging for students who already don't enjoy reading. Our school wants to create leaders for life and the best way for our students to become successful in life is through their education. The books that I have selected are books my students love to read. These books make reading fun and engaging for even my struggling readers. The graphic novels make reading less intimidating and invite students to be visually invested in the story as they read. These books are much more relevant and up to date than the majority of the books we currently have available in our classroom. A love for reading is in important building block to a successful education. Help me get my students excited about reading!
