In too many schools, academic extracurricular activities are dominated by only the best and brightest students. In our program we strive to find a place for everyone. The rule is simple: If you show up and work hard, we will find a place for you. The computers that we acquire through these projects will allow us to make more robot kits available to more students. Our student population is ethnically diverse and economically disadvantaged. Our goal is that all students will find their place at school, that they will find a place where they belong. That sense of accomplishment will help them realize they can be successful in their other classes. That success will lead to better opportunities for our students. For my students, what is just as important is the travel and competition. When we go to academic invitationals we take everybody that has put in the practice time. But the more teams you have, the more computers and robot kits you need. Right now we have more robot kits and students than computers. When students go to competitions, they see that they aren't all that different, that there are other kids just like them. They learn how to compete the right way...how to be a gracious winner and a gracious loser. Most importantly, they learn about themselves.
