Book 'Em is designed to give my students access to great, high interest books which stimulate their desire to be readers and writers. The one type of books that the students seem more easily drawn to are graphic novels which can seem less intimidating because of their pictures and low word count. This project is designed to use students' love of graphic novels to help turn them on to reading longer chapter books and help improve their comprehension skills. The students will read the same chapter book in small groups and engage in literature circles. They will discuss vocabulary, make text connections and practice writing summaries and reviews of the books. After that, they will choose their favorite event from the plot and design a one-page graphic summary of the story. This project will help to show the students that they can use their strengths to help them overcome their weaknesses as well as have a great time reading and learning.
