Currently our school has a few raised beds that are rotten and need replacing as well as new soil. Many of my students have never gardened and have no idea how vegetables and fruits grow. Students are eager to learn how to plant seeds and plants and how to care for them. I have also found that gardening helps my students feel a sense of accomplishment while teaching them how to provide food for themselves and their families. Students currently plant sweet potatoes, greens, and lettuce in not so good conditions. It is a joy to see the pride students take in harvesting and preparing the vegetables to share with their fellow classmates. When students have harvested the vegetables they have raised, we will then move to the kitchen to prepare the food. We make sweet potato pies, we serve greens and cornbread, and prepare hearty salads for the entire middle school each year. Please help us to continue this meaningful tradition for our students.
