These materials will enhance my art classroom and inspire my students to explore the many areas of art. Many of my students have recently arrived to the U.S., mostly from Central America. Most students have never used any art materials other than crayons, markers and maybe colored pencils. By making and glazing pottery pieces inspired by their countries they will feel more accepted and will be more engaged. We will also glaze tiles for a mural in the school's butterfly garden. Travelling to Africa, we will be making prints on burlap. Watercolors are an important part of the curriculum. We will paint landscapes, still lifes, and portraits inspired by artists from around the world like Klee, Georgia O'Keeffe, Picasso, and Monet to name a few. My most challenging students who have trouble focusing and lose interest easily will benefit from the use of the documentation camera bringing them in as I demonstrate the new techniques. By exposing these sheltered students to such an array of materials and culture it will positively motivate them to continue to explore and become appreciative of art throughout their lives.
