We are a charter school serving a high-need community. I serve as an inclusion teacher for students grades K-8, gifted. Many of my forty-four fourth graders are reluctant to open their reading textbooks. One student said, "That's a textbook." He pointed to the chapter book, and said, "That's a real book." My goal is to make sure we read both. I hadn't thought of textbook as opposed to a 'real book'. "When we change the way we look at things; the things we look at change." My students are reading A Cricket in Times Square and Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing. Both books are teacher purchased. Students read, respond, discuss, and apply the state standards to these books. The three books requested in this project will improve reading and change our current list from 3 to 6 titles of classroom sets of books. My students do not have challenging, quality books at home.
