By providing each student with their own individual copy of this highly engaging novel, students will be able to read at home and interact with the text outside of school. Keeping track of their reading will teach lessons of accountability as they learn how to analyze characters and theme and write a persuasive essay. Furthermore, these books will enable my students to improve their reading skills while exploring their identities and the concepts of empathy and integrity. Lastly, this is one of the few young adult novels featuring a gay Latino protagonist, which will open their minds to a new perspective.
