One area my students struggle in is comprehension, read and respond. When they first arrive, they speak little or no English. They are attempting to learn a second language. In giving them reading materials in native language, we want to bolster confidence in reading and understanding what they read. As they become more familiar with the English language, we can transfer them to bilingual or even English leveled readers. The goal is to get them comfortable with reading books regularly, and in order to accomplish this, we need to start in their native language first. Thanks for your assistance!
