Our club meets once a month in the evening for a reading and art session. Students get to take home a book and their art project, plus get a snack that they help to make. The chance to use watercolors, oil crayons, scratch art paper and other special art supplies simply doesn't happen in our children's lives. Access to these materials will boost children's self-esteem and curiosity. Fewer than half of the parents of children from poverty take their children to the public library; Art supplies, beyond crayons, are generally not available in their homes. This club provides a book to be taken home and reread. Plus other children in the home get the advantage of more books in the home. Only 4.4% of our town’s population has a bachelor’s degree, and less than 1% has a graduate or professional degree. With very limited funds, our families often do not purchase art supplies.
