Imagine sitting still, listening to teacher directions, focusing on a fast-paced curriculum for six hours a day, all while your most basic childhood needs are struggling to be met and you don't understand or know how to manage the strong feelings you're experiencing? As a school psychologist, I advocate for the complicated needs of my students as well as support them, their families, and my fellow teachers in overcoming these setbacks. This involves teaching students to understand how they feel and how they can cope with their challenges, all while building positive, fulfilling relationships with others. The items in my project will teach social-emotional learning in the best way possible for my students- through tools and games that are interactive and FUN! Kids can toss a ball to open up about their feelings, role-play difficult situations using a board game, or visualize ways to cope through pictures. They can choose to sit on a super comfy bean bag or squeeze putty when feeling frustrated or worried and then- all on they're own- regulate how they feel using a timer or materials on a clipboard. They can play games with one another that are designed to promote cooperative play, problem-solving, and empathy. The items in my project are therefore essential for students to feel safe and supported, which ultimately help them not only reach academic potential but grow into the happiest and healthiest versions of themselves!
