The purpose of the Boys In Bow Ties for Progress project is tol help middle school age boys become more academically and civic minded, and grow to become future leaders of our community and nation. The boys will commit to wearing bow ties and collared shirts as a means of promoting integrity, pride, and empowerment of self by walking it daily.
The bow tie becomes a symbol of transformation as it resembles a butterfly; the butterfly transforms from the caterpillar. The young men will undergo a process of "transforming" of their own, from a negative mindset about academics, to young scholars who will develop self-esteem, have a more positive outlook toward school, and not drop out of high school. The hope is the boys will grow to be respectable and successful men. Along with wearing the bow ties, the boys will engage in a mentor program were they will network with various community agents and key community leaders, and visit businesses and colleges as a way to expose them to future opportunities.
