I've recently moved from teaching first grade to fourth grade. In my first grade classroom, I was able to move students easily to places that best fit their learning needs. I did this through flexible seating. I allowed the students who needed more movement to work at a standing table. The students who liked having a large work space moved to the floor where they laid on cushions. I allowed students to choose a space where their best learning would take place. As I enter my new classroom I recognize that my 19 older students would also benefit from this flexibility in choice. My current classroom layout offers long tables and chairs. Different from the classic desks and chairs, but nonetheless limiting. The lack of furniture in the classroom limits the choices my students have to decide where they can learn best. I'd like to offer them the freedom to choose a work space where their best learning can take place.
