I teach K-5 special education students with intellectual disabilities and developmental delays. Most of my students also have delays or deficits in their language and communication or in their motor skills. I have students who struggle to find the correct words or appropriate topics when talking with peers, and I also have students who physically cannot produce intelligible speech. A lot of my students don't have functional writing skills; handwriting is either laborious or nonexistent. These struggles are in addition to general learning difficulties due to their disabilities. Despite these challenges, my students come to school every single day with a positive outlook on life. I love each and every one of them more than I can adequately describe in words.
