I will be incorporating Brown Girl Dreaming and March! into two separate units this year. Both texts will be used to teach 4th grade Common Core reading standards as well as Teaching Tolerance's Social Justice Standards. We will analyze both texts to discuss what it means to have great heart, ways in which we form our identities, as well as ways we can create change in our own communities. As a teacher, I believe it is my job to empower my students and show them they are beautiful, they are great, and that they matter. The majority of the students in my class are people of color. My students are brimming with greatness and promise, but living in a world that so often sees them as useless or criminal. This project will allow me to diversify our current curriculum and allow my students to see themselves in the literature we read.
