My students are 30 bright-eyed, energetic 6 and 7-year-olds from the South Side of Chicago who are eager to learn, explore, and have a place to belong. They come from tough circumstances but every day they come to school smiling and excited about what the day holds in store. Their smiles and perpetual optimism inspire me to work harder, make fewer excuses, and give them the good start they deserve in school.
