My students need access to a variety of sensory tools to regulate themselves throughout the day! When kids have the tools to keep their minds and bodies at peace, they have greater capacity to access the incredible instruction of our school's teachers. Special education students have the right the receive the same core instruction alongside their typical peers that all other students do! Here are some examples of how sensory tools help my specific students. Some students are impacted by the highly stimulating environment of elementary school and need tools to keep loud stimuli out. These tools look like noise cancelling headphones. Some students need items to hold in their hands or mouths during instruction so that they can focus. These look like pencil topper fidgets, appropriate things to chew on and pencil grips to support the shape of their hands, as well as something to manually manipulate. Some students need alternative seating options. These tools look like yoga balls, wiggly seats and options that provide them with a comforting squeeze or stretch. Other students need something to help them feel grounded. This tool can look like a medicine ball or weighted blankets and vests.
