My students love being on the move, and love the active music-making process involved with playing classroom instruments. They are always expressing disappointment if I ever plan a lesson that doesn’t involve using instruments in some capacity! During one classroom discussion the students asked if I would get them actual instruments that they could play. After a classroom vote it was decided that ukuleles would be perfect! The ukulele would be an incredibly engaging and versatile hands-on learning opportunity for my students. Unlike many traditional classroom instruments, ukuleles are so lightweight, the students who crave movement and learn best while being active can be engaged with the instrument without needing to sit in one place. My students would receive movement, adding to a healthy 60 minutes of activity per day. Here comes the strolling ukulele club!
