The use of stability balls and other flex seating options in the classroom is not to create a fun environment or give a reason for students to learn not to sit still. They are used to help students engage muscle and parts of their brains needed to balance on different movement equipment. There are a range of benefits in using movement equipment in the classroom such as more attentiveness, quieter classrooms, and an active option for students who need that extra movement without classroom distractions. Research shows, students who sit on a stability equipment, both sides of their brains are engaged to keep them balanced. Having both sides of their brains stimulated while learning helps to increase their focus on what they are learning. It allows students to stay focused, engagement in class discussion and classwork increase, and allows for a positive learning experience.
