I am requesting help with two very important hands-on learning items: folding Geometric Solids and Cuisenair Rods. The research that supports instruction in mathematics continues to emphasize the value of hands-on learning to strengthen mathematical understanding. Because many of my students are also second language learners, the ability to see and manipulate concrete materials becomes even more important to their success. Areas in the sixth grade standards that have proven time and again to create difficulty for my students include understanding volume, surface area, nets and fractions. The geometric solids allow student an opportunity to unfold the shapes and explore surface area and how they appear in two dimensions making this very abstract idea easy to see. I am excited to explore the concept of fractions and proportions with students using the quisenair rods. These hands-on rods allow students to explore a wide variety of concepts including volume of rectangular prisms and cubes and fraction equivalency to name a few. I am requesting a class sized set of each item. For my class this provides each team of four students of set to share and explore as they collaborate and learn.
