Students come to my class thinking reading is boring. Most have never been given the opportunity to read a current novel of choice. By allowing them to choose one of these high-interest novels, they take ownership of their reading adventure. We will be using these novels as book clubs or literary circles. They will form groups with other students reading the same novel and hold discussions. These discussion sessions will enable them to make personal connections to the text as well as to the other students in their groups. As we compare themes across the four novels, students will also learn how author's use characters and plot elements to emphasize theme in their writings. Because the main characters in these novels are all in their teens and all come from a struggling background, my students will easily be able to relate to the challenges presented. Once a reader makes a connection like that to a story, they are anxious to find another and a book lover is born!
