My students love to look through books, hear stories, and get involved with the text as they make personal connections with the characters and plots. Students in my classroom are excited to complete author studies where we take several books written by a single author and compare/contrast the elements. This ensures that the students receive access to the core curriculum and concepts therein while working with materials that appeal to them. My students may have severe academic delays, but that does not meet that they are incapable of sharing in the joy of reading. Funding this project will allow me to purchase a classroom library specific to these skills and needs. The books included in this project correlate to author studies, as there are several titles each from authors Jan Brett, Mo Willems, Ezra Jack Keats, Laura Numeroff, Leo Lionni, and Eric Carle. Additional titles are themed per month, including such books as Miss Bindergarten Celebrates the Last Day of Kindergarten, Groundhog Substitute, and The Adventures of a Plastic Bottle. Every book funded through this project will be adapted to meet the needs of the classroom, ensuring that every students - regardless of circumstance - will partake in a meaning language-based program all year long.
