Students will read Gene Luen Chang's "American Born Chinese" as part of our unit on American Identity. Every single student will be able to read and comprehend this accessible text, yet it will inspire discussion of complex topics relevant to students' lives. Many of my students come from families of immigrants, and this text questions what it really means to be American. Other students struggle to understand our school's focus on diversity and cultural responsiveness. I hope that this book will give those students a window into the life of a family that is struggling to fit into mainstream American culture.
