Part of our program involves students reading on their own each day. This is hard for them. In a 20 minute period a kid may only get 10 minutes of ready because they are distracted or uncomfortable. I want to create a "Happy Place" for them to be comfortable so they can focus on their books and try to engage with them. This isn't something these kids have had a lot of success at. Just by having the opportunity to be somewhere non-traditional can change their mindset about reading and give books a chance they may not otherwise give. A comfortable place to be will give them a fresh start with books. They need to start over and build a relationship with reading. As is, they will go sit on the floor, and even that is making a big difference with them. Still, they are having to get up and readjust and stretch from the hard ground which is still disrupting their reading. The bright colors and textures I have chosen with these chairs, pillows, and rug will add so much to their experience, and I'm hoping will create a desire to be over in that area with their books.
