When an individual has Autism, he/she processes the way they see, smell, hear, and feel daily materials and experiences. Being a middle school student is even more overwhelming and difficult for these students than most. Providing a swing to help meet these students' sensory needs will enable them to regulate behavior, self-calm, and access their school environment. Several times throughout the day, our students require breaks to take away overwhelming outside stimuli (such as loud noises, uncomfortable textures, harsh smells, and bright lights). Having this sensory swing will provide body awareness, whole-body movement, rhythmic motion that calms, and an opportunity to be outdoors in quiet nature. Once they have calmed down with the swing, this will allow our students to re-enter the classroom focused, ready to work on daily functional living tasks, such as folding laundry, making grilled cheese sandwiches, and building basic academic skills.
