In my classroom, all aspects of language are practiced on a daily basis, but we sometimes lack the tools to do this the best that we can. One key component to learning a foreign language is the ability to comprehend reading. The literacy that students develop in a foreign language class, opens up so many doors for students, both in target-language and English-speaking situations.
The book "Pobre Ana" details the life of a Latina teenager in California. Just when she thinks that life cannot get any worse, she visits her family in Mexico for three months. During this time, she learns about the struggle and hardship that many teenagers in Mexico face and grows close with her family. This book encompasses a cultural struggle that is the reality for many families at a reading level specifically designed to target Spanish I students. This novel will both spark my students' curiosity as to other cultures and raise awareness for those who struggle in the world, all while increasing their Spanish literacy level.
These books would be used both as a class read aloud and in small groups or individually. Students will do a variety of activities, such as story mapping or character analysis, to increase their understanding of what they are reading. I am so very excited to share my love for language and Spanish-speaking culture with my curious students!
