Fifth grade math is difficult, sometimes as a teacher it amazes me what students are expected to compute in this day and age. One of the expectations is that students can justify their reasoning in mathematics by providing models and illustrations. Fractions are a difficult concept for students to understand and having manipulative will enable students to feel successful and to truly master the standard set before them. The fractions hands-on kit, fraction circles and student pack will be used during the entire school year as we learn to add, subtract, multiply, and divide fractions as well as equivalent fractions. Students will retain information if they have manipulatives to assist in understanding the why fractions are equivalent and how to find common denominators when performing basic operations with fractions.
