The desks that we have in our classrooms are too large and bulky for the needs of my students. I noticed that the more space I provided, students felt more comfortable to work at their own pace and created outstanding work. Students will be able to move freely around the classroom and choose where they want to sit comfortably and with whom. This is critical for their independence and relationship building. Fifth grade is the last year before they head off to middle school and being able to work in different environments will be so valuable for them. After whole group lessons, students will be able to find their comfortable working space and feel good about what they are doing. I will be able to work with those who are in small groups and provide one-on-one support to those who decide they may need a little privacy to work.
