My students need art supplies to represent their unit of study in social studies. In fourth grade, students study immigration, as well as the history of New York City. Many of my students are new to the country and have family from all over the world. They find personal connections to this unit of study and identify with the struggles of early Americans, and want a way to represent this connection with history, to who they are today! Through a canvas quilt, students will be able to represent who they are and what America is...displaying this pride they have in their culture, traditions, and interests and claiming their identity as beautiful and unique. The goal of this unit is to understand that New York City, and the United States at large, is an immigrant nation...founded in a rich and diverse medley of beliefs, skin colors, and practices. Difference is something to be loved and encouraged, and is what MAKES America great!
