Children need dictionaries that have been created just for them at their grade level. My students will begin to learn how to read and use a dictionary appropriately. I have a student now who will take my big fat dictionary off my bookshelf and will read from the pages of the book. It is incredible!
"Children's vocabulary, comprehension, and language skills develop as they grow older – and the level they are at can depend on what they’re learning at school, what books they like to read, and what their friends are talking about." - A quote taken from choosing dictionaries at Oxford Dictionaries.
Having dictionaries in my classroom is important in order to develop and enrich our students' language as well as helping to improve their spelling. Second grade is an age where they are trying to sound out words. Having a dictionary with them, they are able to look up the word and spell the word correctly.
When teachers and parents use language and examples that are appropriate for the grade-level of the student, dictionaries can be easy to use and understand and can place a love of words and language when the students begin to learn how to understand and read the dictionary.
