These books will help my students understand the impact that the Cultural Revolution and Communist had the day to day lives of the Chinese people through the eyes of a young girl. The author was a young girl living in China during the Cultural Revolution. This young Chinese girl in the story is same age as my students. She writes with vivid details the impact the Revolution has on their daily lives. My students struggle to grasp that the rest of the world does not have the personal freedoms that we as Americans simply take for granted. They have no experiences to relate to the lack of freedom of speech or the fear of unwarranted arrest. "Red Scarf Girl: A Memoir of the Cultural Revolution" will allow my children to experience vicariously through the author, daily life under the communist during the Cultural Revolution. After teaching the Chinese Cultural Revolution, I plan on reading the book as a class project. I will have my students draw comparisons of the author's life to theirs. My hope is to deepen their appreciation of our American freedoms and ideals and deepen their understanding of life under communism. I simply cannot describe the situation in China at this time as well as the author does. The author graphically describes in detail the daily fear that her family faces for things beyond their control. Her grandfather was a "landlord" and therefore the family is blacklisted even though the man had died years before. She describes her father being fired from his job and his subsequent arrest. As a result of her family she is "branded" and is urged to renounce them in order to escape.
