Studies show that children like mine, who come from low-income families, use 30 million less words than peers of the same age from more affluent communities. My goal this year is to help my students develop the language they need to express themselves and be successful in Pre-K and beyond. We will utilize these materials in our classroom to build oral language and vocabulary skills in our Dramatic Play and Storytelling stations. A cash register can be used in a variety of pretend play scenarios, and builds math skills as well as oral language. The felt board and storytelling pieces will be used to retell stories and create new stories, further extending vocabulary and comprehension.
