Numerous research studies have shown that gross motor skill deficits are on the rise, believed to be due to long durations in front of a computer or video games. In order to obtain success in the classroom, we must help our students develop the gross motor skills necessary for learning readiness. Success in the classroom is dependent on a student's ability to control themselves in their environment. A motor lab will benefit students who have gross motor deficits, as well as those who have hyperactivity/focusing issues by providing an appropriate outlet for their energy and allowing them to return to the classroom able to focus and experience academic success. The aim of the activities in our motor lab are to stimulate and train the child’s sensory systems. For example, the Hokki Stools, are designed to help students with a need for movement. The stools are utilized while a child is working to allow them to move by rocking side to side, but still participate in the classroom work. Items in the Gross Motor Cart, include bean bags, hula hoops and large rubber balls. Through specifically designed activities, these items can be used to allow a student to release energy in a way that also facilitates large muscle development. The Balance Beam is designed to allow students to work on balance and coordination, but also on the focus required to move across the beam. This is the focus they need to achieve success in the classroom. The addition of a gross motor lab to our campus will assist students with sensory issues and aid in motor skill development which will allow all of our student to achieve to their maximum potential.
