Misconceptions are common with middle schoolers. Atoms are too small to see, and the old "ball and stick" model of molecules isn't an entirely accurate representation of how molecules work. These Snatoms help students visualize atoms! Something that is too small for them to see! They help the students feel, see and experience how atoms make up molecules! Magnets are used to represent the forces of attraction that hold molecules together. My students can hold these models and actually feel the forces of attractions. They can also grasp the concept of what "breaking bonds" mean. Sticks are not broken between balls, but forces are overcome to break apart molecules. Students can work together to construct explanations for how their world works while also having fun!
