These materials will be used by students with special needs ranging from autism, emotional disturbance, specific learning disabilities and ADHD to help promote and maintain a safe, creative, hands-on learning environment. Students will be creating their art work in a new, innovative way within the art room by working on different projects at specially designed "stations." These stations allow students to focus on small projects during the class period instead of one large on-going project; helping create a successful strategy for learning to accommodate most of our school's students. Many of the students have difficulty with fine motor skills or following multi-step directions so the different stations will consist of "Zen tangle, cartoons/comics, and beaded jewelry." Students in the Zen tangle station will work on individual tiles with Micron pens to complete swirls and designs that visually appeal to them. They will also have the opportunity to practice using a special felt-tipped pen, which can improve their fine motor skills. Students that are in the cartoon/comic station will be able to use tracing paper to assist them in transferring fictional characters onto a piece of blank paper, which can result in a comic strip. Students require extended focus and concentration for tracing activities, which gives them great practice for other classrooms. In the beaded jewelry station you will find students creating their own jewelry using various materials such as beads, wire, fish hooks, and clasps. These materials and the art of creating a piece of jewelry will assist in fine motor skills as well as spatial sense. Students will be working in a small group to promote positive peer interaction. Each station will provide our students with an opportunity to independently create their own masterpiece as well as work in small groups, which is required by most IEP's.
